Nellmapius “was not to see the full fruition of his great efforts at Irene” (Helme, 1974:23). He caught a cold in the winter of 1893, which became much worse by the middle of July of that year. He had also developed a dangerous skin disease on his head, and by the 25th his condition was critical. On the night of the 27th of July his temperature suddenly rose, and at eight o’clock on the morning of July 28 he passed away. “The short, spectacular Nellmapius era had ended”
